The Varroa Alcohol Wash is a reliable method for detecting Varroa mites in your hives and assessing the level of infestation. It helps beekeepers identify mite levels early and make informed decisions about hive management and treatment.
Regular monitoring is an important part of managing Varroa. We recommend testing your hives at least once a month, particularly during peak bee season or when colonies are being split, moved or prepared for honey production.
How to use
Collect approximately 300 bees, add an alcohol-based washing solution, and gently shake for 60 seconds to dislodge mites for counting.
Note: Alcohol washes are a monitoring method and will kill the sampled bees. This small sample helps provide an indication of the wider colony’s mite levels.

4-strip pack – 2 treatments (treats 2 hives or one hive twice)
Apivar is a long-lasting Varroa mite treatment containing amitraz as the active ingredient. The strips are designed to release the active ingredient gradually, providing ongoing control of Varroa mites within the hive. The strips work through contact as bees move around the hive, transferring the active ingredient throughout the colony. This helps target Varroa mites across multiple generations of brood.
When to use
Apivar is generally used from late autumn through winter, after the main honey harvest and once honey supers have been removed. It can also be used at other times when monitoring shows treatment is required, provided the product restrictions are followed.
Use with honey supers
Do not use Apivar while honey supers intended for human consumption are on the hive. Remove all honey supers before treatment and follow the product instructions regarding when they can be returned.
How to use
Hang the strips in the brood area, positioned where bees are actively moving across both sides of the strips. Leave them in the hive for 6–10 weeks, following the supplied instructions and current Australian requirements. Remove all strips after the treatment period.
Important
Monitor mite levels before and after treatment, do not leave strips in the hive longer than recommended, and always follow the product label and current Australian permit requirements.

2-Dose Pack – 4 strips (treats 2 hives or one hive twice)
Formic Pro is a Varroa mite treatment containing formic acid as the active ingredient. Unlike treatments such as Apivar and Bayvarol, Formic Pro works through formic acid vapour, allowing it to target Varroa mites on adult bees and within capped brood.
When to use
Formic Pro can be used when Varroa monitoring indicates treatment is required. It can be particularly useful when brood is present, as formic acid can penetrate capped brood.
Temperature requirements
Use Formic Pro when daytime temperatures are between 10°C and 29.5°C. Temperature is critical when using formic acid treatments. Temperatures above 33°C during the first three days of treatment may result in excessive bee, brood and queen loss. Check the forecast before applying treatment and avoid treatment if temperatures are expected to exceed the recommended range.
Colony strength
Formic Pro should be used with strong, healthy colonies. Avoid using it on weak, stressed or very small colonies, as formic acid treatment can place additional stress on the colony and increase the risk of brood or queen loss.
Use with honey supers
Formic Pro can be used while honey supers are on the hive when used according to the current Australian directions. Honey must not be harvested for 2 weeks after treatment ends.
Important
Formic Pro is a strong treatment and must be used carefully. Always check the temperature forecast before application, ensure the colony is strong and healthy, and follow the current product label and Australian permit requirements. Use appropriate personal protective equipment when handling the strips.

4-strip pack – 1 treatment (treats 1 hive)
Bayvarol is a Varroa mite treatment containing flumethrin as the active ingredient. The strips are designed to control Varroa mites within the hive through contact as bees move across the treated surfaces.
As bees move around the brood area, the active ingredient is transferred throughout the colony, helping target Varroa mites on adult bees.
When to use
Bayvarol is generally used after the main honey harvest and once honey supers have been removed. It can also be used at other times when monitoring shows treatment is required, provided the product label and current Australian permit requirements are followed.
Use with honey supers
Do not use Bayvarol while honey supers intended for human consumption are on the hive. Remove all honey supers before treatment and follow the product instructions regarding when they can be returned.
How to use
Place the strips in the brood area where bees are actively moving. Use the number of strips specified on the product label for the size and configuration of the colony. Leave the strips in the hive for the recommended treatment period, then remove all strips when treatment is complete.
Important
Monitor Varroa levels before and after treatment. Rotate treatments with different active ingredients where appropriate to help reduce the risk of Varroa developing resistance. Always follow the supplied product instructions and current Australian permit requirements.

A compact, cordless oxalic acid vaporizer designed for hobby and recreational beekeepers managing smaller apiaries. The InstantVap 18V Lite uses a compatible 18V power-tool battery, allowing convenient treatment without the need for cables between hives. The manufacturer recommends the Lite model for apiaries of up to 20 colonies.
We use the InstantVap 18V in our own apiary and like the convenience of its cordless 18V design, particularly when moving between hives.
How Oxalic Acid Works
Oxalic acid vaporisation is used to control Varroa mites on adult bees. When vaporised, oxalic acid is distributed throughout the hive and settles onto bees and hive surfaces, exposing Varroa mites through contact and helping reduce mite levels within the colony. Oxalic acid is particularly effective during periods of little or no capped brood, making it an excellent treatment option during brood breaks, as Varroa mites protected beneath capped brood are not effectively reached by the treatment. Oxalic acid vaporisation can also be used to rapidly reduce Varroa mite levels when mite numbers begin to increase, helping beekeepers bring colonies back under control as part of an ongoing Varroa management program.
